I thoroughly enjoyed it and it was my favourite. For an unexplained reason the world is about to come to an end. Able runs a diner and he prepares for the end by doing what he enjoys most, serving customers. A Dog Named Supper passed me by. Nicely written but a quiet story. The Icicle Tree is a story of infidelity and loss from the viewpoints of each of the people involved. Again, well written and interesting.
The multiple perspectives really helped. A very good story. Of the remaining three stories Always Get The Check was the stand out. Overall I enjoyed the majority of the stories.
The characters were good to excellent, the dialogue interesting. May have received free review copy.
Sep 22, Pam Thomas rated it it was amazing. I liked the introduction to this book which tells you a little about the writer himself and how he encounters glitches in life. This is one of those books which has a series of short stories, not like many you find on the market and its so different, each story brings the reader into experiencing what life is really about, with a no holds barred approach and very down to earth and very laid back.

I like the stories, these are the sort you would find in a short story magazine, although each one has twists and turns, not quite what you are expecting but all the same something quite different and special. Paul McCormick has a great future in writing books, would certainly recommend his books if only for the detailed awareness which he incorporates into each story.

It's semi-interesting, in that it kept me reading. But, I didn't feel any emotion or connection to the stories at all. They all sort of meander along, and then just fizzle out at the end.
And the one story that gave me a few goosebumps "9th and Park" also just kind of peters out. It was all very disappointing. I just don't understand what the author was trying to accomplish. Oct 24, Mary C. Moore rated it really liked it Shelves: literary , review-requests-finished. McCormack is a wonderful writer. This collection really showcases the elegance and maturity of his writing.
Although many of the stories were a bit too bitter or cynical for me, I still rated it highly for the prose alone. If this book lands in the hands of someone who enjoys the sad and darker side of the human psyche, they are in for a real treat. I appreciated that, for the most part, each story was wrapped up, whether neatly or not so neatly, which is hard to do in any collection of short st McCormack is a wonderful writer. McCormack does a great job of exploring different narrative styles and varying points of view in each story. This is a really lovely little collection for those of you Vonnegut and Hesse minded types. Dec 27, Lori Rubin rated it really liked it.
